DEFENDING CHALLENGED MATERIAL:
- Be familiar with the material and aware of any
potential challenge issues.
- Listen patiently to the patron’s complaint. Be
understanding.
- When the patron has finished expressing their
concern, paraphrase the complaint to ensure understanding. Be calm,
compassionate, and respectful. Communication should be calm and let the patron
know that they are being taken seriously.

When the patron’s concern is understood, kindly
explain the materials selection policy, how the particular item fits into that
policy, and the library’s support of intellectual freedom.

Have the following documents/information easily
accessible for the patron if they’re interested:
- Library Materials Selection Policy
- YA Collection Development plan
- ALA Library Bill of Rights
- Reviews/awards for the item in question
- Justification of selection
- If the patron is still not satisfied, have a
formal Materials Reconsideration Form available and give that to the patron.
- The patron should return the completed form to
the reference desk for further action.
